A few months ago, I got a notification about a few kindle eBooks being free. This book was in that list and the title itself fascinated me. I got a copy of the ebook and was fortunate to finish it.
Sex workers are a group of people whose existence make many feel uncomfortable. They try to not acknowledge them and basically sweep under the carpet any discussion about them. But everyone should know about them, their plight, hardships and all the hell they go through on a daily basis, all for just 2 square meals. This book is really an eye opener. It is so gripping and filled with events that really makes one question humanity.
Majority of these women were forced into prostitution, one way or the other, whether due to poor familial income, kidnapped, tricked into or even worse, as part of a culture/ tradition. And the saddest part is that there is no going back after that. Their lives are doomed and will more than likely end in one brothel or the other.
The author Deepak really needs to be appreciated. Being relatively young, he was able to paint the pictures of the daily lives of these humans so vividly and clearly. The effort and time he has taken to show is each and everyone in Fathima's brothel is really worth a praise.
Another thing I really liked was how there was also a section of Hijaras/ eunuch and how they get into this kind of life.
I highly recommend this book to everyone as it really serves as an eye opener.
-Rithin.
