My Rating: 5/5

I discovered Richard Russo after reading and thoroughly enjoying his novel "Straight Man". That novel really spoke to me since it had a humorous tone and told everyday events that occurred throughout the course of a week in such a fresh and interesting narrative. Ever since, I have been interested in reading more of his works. While perusing through the used book shelves at my local Goodwill, I stumbled upon Empire Falls. I picked it up immediately like a child seeing a candy on the table and started reading it right as I got home.
Empire Falls bear no resemblance to Straight Man whatsoever. Empire Falls takes its time to introduce the characters and really build the setting. Despite its slow paced plot, the narration and wording really makes it a compelling read nonetheless. The characters are memorable and gain our empathy. I want to mention the protagonist Miles Roby's character arc since this character really deserves attention. Seen as a passive, harmless person who can be taken for granted, it is astounding to see how much he had matured and started to stand for himself in a course of a year. His dilemmas, questions and the pain of his aching heart could all be felt well by the readers. By the end of the novel, I believe that Miles has grown along with the town to finally be their true self.
I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and I am positive that it will leave a lasting impression on my mind for a while atleast. Highly recommended!
