Book Review: This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay

    I'm going to start by thanking Goodreads. While on the hunt for the next book to read, I somehow stumbled upon this book in the Goodreads app. It immediately grabbed by attention since I too am a junior doctor, currently doing housemanship. I immediately added it to my "want to read" list. After so many years of wanting a Kindle, when I finally got one, this book became the first one I read on it.

I absolutely loved this book and couldn't keep it down. Being a junior doctor myself, I could very much relate to many events the author has experienced. It just feels so reassuring to hear them in such a light manner. All the journal entries were remarkable, most of them leaving me with a smile, chuckle, or even a huge laugh. The entries are so brutally honest that it really shows the inner workings and behind the scenes of what really happens in a hospital and the trial and tribulations a doctor has to go through. The language is so simple that you don't need to be a doctor to know the jargon and I really like how there are footnotes and annotations with explanations for some terms unfamiliar to a non-medic.

I strongly recommend this book to both medicos and non-medicos equally. For us medicos, this book serves as a reminder of our daily struggles and serves as an aid to lighten up our mood and appreciate the little things. For my non medical friends, this book will help shed light on the life we lead and the fact that in the end of the day we are human beings too.

I am certain that this will be in my top 5 books I would keep with me and go back all throughout my life. Now I can't wait to read the other books by Adam Kay.

Ever since the hues were washed away from my life, it has become nothing but a blur.  Mundane agony and constant worries  have ended up covering it fully like fur.  But at this moment right now,  all that have become a memory; As I  stumble upon an aura, so luminous, vivid, and shimmery.  Along with the sky,  it is painting my soul and along with the surroundings,  it is lighting up my life.  An experience like no other; Something I have craved to see.  There it is, the alluring aurora, right in front of me. January 2008 ; just a few months after my family and I moved to the United States.       Hailing from the Southern part of India, to us snow was an abstract concept; something we witnessed occasionally in film songs and music videos.  It was sometime after the 3rd period in 6th grade when a kid yelled out "Hey look, it's snowing!". Along with the whole class, I turned towards the window too. To the kids around me, these powdery white flurries meant a seasonal occurrence; a simple reminder of the winter wonders.
